Volleyball
The Hockaday Varsity Volleyball game competed in the Southwest Preparatory Conference from Nov. 9 to Nov. 10. Because they were ranked the number one seed in the North going into the competition, they received a bye so did not have to play on Nov. 8.
The team won their first game against the Kinkaid School on Friday, beating the team in a swift 3 sets. Their next match was against the Episcopal High School Houston/Bellaire. Hockaday lost the game, winning one set in comparison to EHS’s three. To conclude the tournament, the daisies played the Episcopal School of Dallas. In a close, nail-biter game that went to five matches, Hockaday lost 2-3, claiming fourth place in the SPC tournament overall.
Senior and Volleyball captain Maddie McBride appreciates the effort that her teammates put into the tournament and enjoyed their season.
“Although we did not place as high as we hoped, we fought hard for every point, and I’m so proud of our team for this,” McBride said. “We grew a lot during this season and ended strong.”
Field Hockey
Last Thursday through Saturday, Hockaday’s Varsity Field Hockey competed in SPC and finished fifth. They won their first game 4-0 against Houston Christian High School, sending them into the quarterfinals. On a frigid Friday at 11 a.m., Field Hockey fell to Kinkaid 2-0. Isabella Shadle, team co-captain and senior, enjoyed playing on the team and how hard her teammates worked despite the loss against Kinkaid.
“Overall, I was really excited about how we played as a team and I think SPC this year was one of the best team memories. We had such a fun season, and I am so sad that it’s over,” Shadle said.
Waking up bright and early on Saturday, the field hockey team redeemed themselves and beat Episcopal High School on Saturday 2-1 in overtime.
Cross Country
On Saturday, November 10, Cross Country raced at Norbuck Park in SPC and finished fifth. Adoette Vaughan, Hockaday senior, won first place in the race with a time of 17:25.72. This is the fourth year in a row Vaughan has won first place in SPC. The next two racers to finish were Parker Hawk, 9th, and Lenna Mehandle, 22nd. Jess Katzman, senior, could not have asked for a better team this season.
“The team is really close and we’re honestly a family. The season went well, and we won North Zone which was great. Obviously, I think we all wish that SPC went better, but all 10 of us had good runs that day and we just came up short,” Katzman said.
