Spending hours at the Department of Motor Vehicles instead of at school feels like a waste of time, but often you don’t have a choice. You have to power through the complicated process if you want to continue driving. To ease the burden on your shoulders, here is an updated guide on renewing your license. 

If you are under the age of 18, you must renew your license in person at the DMV. Fortunately, if you are 18 or older and want to renew your license, you can do so online.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety website, these are the requirements for renewing online:

1. You renewed your driver’s license in person at a driver’s license office last time.
2. You have a Class C, M or CM driver license. You cannot renew a Class A, Class B or commercial driver license online. 
3. Your driver’s license either expires in less than two years, or has been expired for less than two years.
4. You are at least 18 years of age and your driver’s license is not a provisional or learner license. 
5. You are younger than 79 years of age.
6. Your vision and your physical and mental conditions have not changed in a way that affects your ability to drive safely since your last renewal. 
7. Your license is valid (not suspended or revoked), and you do not have any warrants or unpaid tickets. 
8. Your Social Security Number is already on file.
9. You are a U.S. citizen.
10. You have your most recent driver’s license with the audit number. Or be able to answer security questions to verify your identity. 

Renewing licenses online only takes a few minutes and you don’t have to miss the entire school day.

Other options to renew your driver’s license include via mail and mobile. The Texas Department of Public Safety will send an invitation to renew your license to your home. The instructions should be listed on the invitation. If you are looking to renew your license by phone, then you must meet the same requirements as renewing online.
