Last week, Hockaday’s sophomore Kashmira Kuloor organized a Homecoming Dress Swap. Racks for dress donations were available outside of the Hockaday Book Store from September 3-5, with the event taking place Thursday afternoon. Kuloor shared her ideas for this swap earlier this year with Ms. Laura Day, Hockaday’s Director of Innovation and Collaboration, and Upper School science teacher Ms. Crowley before putting it into motion.
“The Dress Swap facilitates building empathy and learning new important civic behavior promoting sustainability, equity, and charity,” says Kuloor. “The Swap may also benefit students who may find the cost of a dress prohibitive to attend HOCO.”
Kuloor had a goal to extend the dresses’ lifespans and minimize waste in order to combat the negative consequences of fast fashion.
“Approximately ninety dresses were donated by Hockaday students for the Dress Swap this year!” says Kuloor. “About fifty dresses were claimed during the Dress Swap.”
Along with Kuloor, the team who worked together to manage this event plans to donate the remaining dresses to students at Irma Rangel, an all-girls school in DISD.
