SPC Recap Winter 2019

SPC+Recap+Winter+2019

Soccer

The Hockaday Varsity Soccer team competed in the Southwest Preparatory Conference from Feb. 15 to Feb. 16. Since the soccer team was ranked as the number one seed in the North going into the competition, they received a bye so they did not play on Feb. 14.

The team won their first game against Greenhill in overtime with a score of 1-0. They advanced to the semi-finals, where they played Episcopal High School Houston/Bellaire. They beat EHS with a score of 4-1 and continued to the championship game on Feb.16. In a hard-fought, nail-biter game that came down to the wire, Hockaday lost 0-1, claiming second place in the SPC tournament overall.

Junior Meg Wilson enjoyed the soccer season and hopes to carry on the success to next season.

“SPC for HVS was a huge success. We really handled the pressure of going into the tournament as 1st seed in the North. We played one of our best soccer seasons and most importantly came out with a performance that we were so proud of,” Wilson said. “Even though losing in the finals was tough, it’s just more motivation to get back on the field next year and improve our game. We’re looking forward to bringing home the championship trophy next February!”

Basketball

From Feb. 14 to Feb. 16, Hockaday’s Varsity Basketball team competed in SPC. They lost their first game to EHS 53-37. On Friday morning, the team played an early 10 a.m. game against John Cooper. The team played their hearts out but came up short, barely falling 46-43. The team did not place in SPC.

Senior and basketball captain JoJo Gum appreciated the spirit from her team despite the disappointment of losing.

“Basketball went in as a team and I think despite the disappointment we felt at our record, we were able to come together as a team and have fun while cheering on soccer,” Gum said.

Swimming

On Feb. 15, the Hockaday Varsity Swimming team competed in SPC. The team was successful in many events, specifically earning second place in the 200m Medley Relay and third place in the 400m Free Relay. Freshman Brooke Adams won second place in the 100m back. After a successful meet, the team finished third overall in SPC.

Abby Tchoukaleff, junior and swimming captain, had a great experience with her team and enjoyed the support provided by the team.

“The entire team supported each other throughout the whole season. We had some incredible swims at SPC and I believe the high energy that was present at SPC led to our success,” Tchoukaleff said.

Diving

The Hockaday Varsity Diving team took on SPC on Feb. 15. The team worked hard in the tournament. Caroline Collins, Hockaday sophomore, finished seventh with 228.35 points. Elizabeth Roosevelt, captain and sophomore, finished ninth with 209.75 points and freshman Campbell Harris finished tenth with 199.25 points.

Roosevelt was impressed that her team never stopped working hard and improving throughout the season.

“Diving at SPC  was so fun. The whole team improved so much this year and it was a really great bonding experience,” Roosevelt said.
