Hockaday hosts the annual Southwest Field Hockey Festival

On Sept. 5 and 6, Hockaday hosted the annual Southwest Field Hockey Festival. With temperatures blazing well past 90 degrees, girls from The Oakridge School, St. John’s School, All Saints’ Episcopal School of Fort Worth, St. Mary’s Hall, The Episcopal School of Dallas, Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, Fort Worth Country Day School, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, Greenhill School, The Kinkaid School, St. Agnes Academy, Casady School, Highland Park High School, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, battled it out in numerous field hockey games.

The games were 20 minutes long on Friday and 40 minutes long on Saturday. Both days the games were played without half times. Despite the heat, the teams played seven versus seven on Friday, on regulation sized fields. On Saturday, the games were played 11 vs. 11.

Hockaday Varsity Field Hockey played St. John’s twice during the weekend. Junior Frances Burton, a member of the Hockaday Varsity Field Hockey team for three years, has played in many tough SPC games against St. John’s.

“Playing St. John’s is always very intense. There is such a big rivalry and lots of emotions between us,” Burton said.

Hockaday lost one game against St. John’s, but tied the other game. The Field Hockey Festival does not count towards SPC, but provides the teams with an opportunity to play some of their future competitors.
