Thirteen Best Side Characters of 2013

In honor of awards season, The Fourcast crowns the 13 best supporting characters of 2013.

1. Loki of Asgard (Tom Hiddleston)- Thor 2: The Dark World

Cunning, and slightly insane, the most complex character of Marvel keeps getting better.

“Oh, I can feel the righteousness flowing through me! Shall we have a discussion about truth, justice and the American way?” (after turning into Captain America)

2. The Mother (Cristin Milioti)- How I Met Your Mother

Wonderfully awkward with hinted characteristics making her seem larger than life, the much lived up to title character is making the cut.

“One ticket to Farhampton, please.”

3. Michonne (Danai Gurira)- The Walking Dead

A woman of few words, she is the only person actually getting things done this season.

“They weren’t even human to start with.”

4. Ten (David Tennant)- Doctor Who

The nicest surprise of 2013, one short episode was enough to remind me of our love.

“I don’t want to go.”

5. Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson)- The Hunger Games

A heart of gold, the ‘good boy’ trope falls away as his silver tongue becomes just as ruthless as Katniss’s bow.

“If you die, and I live, I’d have nothing. Nobody else that I care about.”

6. Finnick Odair (Sam Claflin)- The Hunger Games

Deception is a trend among victors, yet the web the fisherman crafts is an art that entangles the Capitol, and the audience.

“Want a sugar cube?”

7. Kili (Aiden Turner)- The Hobbit

The youngest dwarf goes from deadly to hopelessly romantic to dying in a matter of minutes, winning the hearts of the theater—and of one elf.

“She walks in starlight in another world. It was just a dream. Do you think she could have loved me?”

8. Fitzsimmons- Leo and Jemma respectively (Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge)- Agents of SHIELD

Bouncing off of each other’s words in science speech, we don’t understand how they go back and forth from platonic to romantic.

“Enough mission talk. Did anything exciting happen at the Hub? I shot a superior officer in the chest.”

9. Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts)- American Horror Story: Coven

Her persona is charming, and psychological twists and turns make me want to crown her Jessica Lange Jr.

“I bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”

10. Johanna Mason (Jena Malone)- The Hunger Games

Tough as nails combined with brief vulnerability from the victor leave my heart aching from laughter and sadness.

“They can’t hurt me like the rest of you. There’s no-one left I love.”

11. Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev)- The Vampire Diaries

A doppelganger I can stand, Katherine is deadly even as a human, better than Elena.

“We both know I could rip you to shreds and do my nails at the same time.”

12. Captain Hook/Killian Jones (Colin O’Donoghue)- Once Upon a Time

A good old-fashioned villain, not a chance. A chivalrous swashbuckler? As you wish…

“A man unwilling to fight for what he wants deserves what he gets.”

13. Kevin Tran (Osric Chau)- Supernatural

The teenage prophet has a hellish road. His death was anything but heavenly.

“I just want to be the first Asian-American President of the United States.”

– Kate Clement
