Top 14 Movies for Valentine’s Day

Perspectives Editor Molly Montgomery gives us her top 14 must-watch movies for Valentine’s Day. Ranging from sentimental tear-jerkers to classic rom-coms, these movies are crowd favorites that everyone will LOVE!

1. Grease
Supreme winner, no question. This film has eternally left me with the belief that I was born in the wrong decade, and the combination of John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, sock-hops and hickies from Kenicke is sure to leave you hopelessly devoted to this classic.

2. West Side Story
Romeo and Juliet in a different century, Maria and Tony are the most iconic star-crossed lovers on television. Keep tissues nearby and watch to-NIIIIGHT.

3. Wall-E
It’s impossible not to love Wall-E as he journeys across the galaxy not only for love but also for the sake (and physical health) of the future human race.

4. The Notebook
It’s a cliché, but clichés are clichés for a reason. If you haven’t watched it already, I’m not sure why you’re reading this article because the romance genre is probably not for you.

5. Say Anything
Not only a great watch, but it will also give you something to talk about with your estranged aunt at the next family reunion; John Cusack is the great connector of all women.

6. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Mathew McConoughey and Kate Hudson are so charismatic that they made this list twice. I understand that perhaps their movies lack substance, but when you’re that good looking you get a pass.

7. Love Actually
I haven’t seen it, but it is (I guess?) a staple of the rom-com genre. On a separate note, take these suggestions with a grain of salt.

8. Frozen
Amazing songs, amazing characters, amazing unpredictable narrative arc. But one of the best parts of Frozen is that queen Elsa doesn’t end up with anyone at the end of the film, forming the impossible combo of feminism and romance into one movie.

9. Gone With the Wind
Only really suggesting this because of the four-day weekend, otherwise you won’t have enough time to finish this two-disc film. Historically inaccurate but still somehow poignant.

10. Lady and the Tramp
No explanation needed; watch if you want to feel good. Bring spaghetti.

11. Princess Bride
The perfect Valentine’s Day movie to watch with pretty much anyone in your life because everyone ever likes at least part of it. Also super quotable.

12. Titanic
Rose and Jack, aka Romeo and Juliet, never fail to tug at the heartstrings, even on view number seven.

13. Fool’s Gold
Beautiful people, beautiful yachts, beautiful scenery. But seriously, a shirtless McConaughey is not to be missed.

14. Slumdog Millionaire
Complete emotional roller coaster, but it also includes my personal favorite chase scene of all time. If you don’t feel like watching the whole movie, at least download Jai-ho, with or without the Pussycat Dolls; it’s just as iconic as the film.
