A Rundown of Awards Season

A+Rundown+of+Awards+Season

At the beginning of every new year, bright camera lights reflect off the sparkling, glamorous dresses on the Hollywood red carpets as the paparazzi try to snap perfect pictures of celebrities.

Starting off awards season, the Golden Globe Awards was Jan. 6 and hosted by Sandra Oh, actress in “Killing Eve,” and Andy Samberg, American actor and comedian. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a drama film depicting the life of the band Queen and their lead singer Freddie Mercury, took home two unexpected wins in the categories Best Drama Motion Picture and Best Actor in a Drama Picture.

Throughout the Golden Globes, many winning female celebrities made short speeches about female representation especially in Hollywood, in particular, Glenn Close. Winning Best Actress in a Drama Picture, Close made an empowering speech about being a female in her field of work. Despite this, there were no female nominees in the Best Director category.

The 61st Grammys takes place on Feb. 6 and with singers like Post Malone, Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Shawn Mendes and many others performers, the award show is lined up with some of the most popular artists of 2019. The Grammys is going to be hosted by singer and songwriter, Alicia Keys and will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. With so much popular music released in 2018 and some in 2019, it is hard to predict who will take home a Grammy, however, the award show airs on CBS so viewers can watch the program at home.

On Feb. 24, the 91st Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles but will be aired on CBS. Originally Kevin Hart, comedian and actor, was planning on hosting the Oscars, however, after several prejudiced tweets resurfaced from his Twitter account, he stepped down from this position. Currently, the award show has not announced a replacement for him, and many believe the Oscars will be hostless.

The Oscar Nominations were revealed  Jan. 22. First off, “Black Panther” was nominated for Best Picture, making it the first superhero film to be in this category. In addition, “Black Panther” is nominated in seven out of the 24 categories. However, “Crazy Rich Asians” was not nominated in any categories in the Academy Awards which came as a shock to many viewers and fans of the hit movie.

Over the past couple of years, the academy has worked on improving the diversity in their group of critics and have succeeded in doing so. The academy also added a new category this year which is the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film, which awards the most popular movies of the year, however, it will not be added in time for the 2019 Oscars.
